Bookshelf Tour #1 [2016 Edition]

Greetings, pals!

I thought it’s about time for me to reveal my top secret, I deeply apologize for I have never told or explained to you any of this. The truth is, ugh, it’s just so hard to say out loud (technically alright, I know I’m typing. Stop trying to catch my mistakes.) Just read on and you’ll find out.

Overview

Yup, can you see my failed humor aka the intro to this post? The lameness is so thick I’m choking on it.

Anyways, so here’s where I keep all my babies! This bookshelf or more like a cabinet, is located in the living room of my house because there’s not enough space in my bedroom.

I decided to divide this tour into three parts as there are three floors (or something). I hope you enjoy it!

First things first, we can all take a look at how I should have been awarded a Nobel Prize for being able to cram all those books with that teeny tiny space. My current book population is 101, but if you (even have the time to) count the books in the picture, you’d only see around 95, because obviously this picture was taken a while ago. A month maybe.

I sorted my books by colors (yup, i know, a miserably failed rainbow bookshelf attempt), but in some areas, you might noticed the contrast in colors, thats because I also sort them by authors and/or series.

Part 1

This is the top shelf, which is my favorite shelf. It’s my favorite not in a way that the books stored up there are my favourites (though most of them are) but I love the cool/dark color scheme.

This shelf consists of:

  • The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  • The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
  • The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey
  • The Lunar Chronicles by Marrisa Meyer – Yes, the rest of the series (Cinder, Scarlet, Cress are behind Winter) + Wolf the stuff animal ;D
  • Both of Me by Jonathan Prieson
  • The Rest of us just lives here by Patrick Ness
  • Unravel Me by Tehereh Mafi
  • Shatter Me by Tehereh Mafi
  • Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes
  • Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
  • Armada by Ernest Cline
  • City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
  • City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Illustrated Edition (You can see it in the overview picture)

And that’s it for the first section. I hope you enjoyed it. Part 2 is coming soon!

What about you? What is your bookshelf like? We can agree mine needs to be expanded. Honestly, if books has claustrophobia, they would really hate me. XD

Thank you so much for your time!

Happy Reading,

Kimsiang

[Book Review] MAYBE SOMEDAY by Colleen Hoover

“Sometimes in life, we need a few bad days in order to keep the good ones in perspective.”

Guys, I finished Maybe Someday on my phone.

Yes, I just finished an ebook. Like, this is only the 5th ebook I actually finished in Kimsiang’s history of ebooks. Reading through the electronic screen has just been very hard for me. The main reason is that my eyesight is not that healthy and I’m severely short-sighted, therefore my eyes get tired easily and just can’t focus on the texts for hours on end, anyways, that’s not the point. Let’s get to what I think about this book!

Maybe Someday was the few exceptions that I just couldn’t help but kept scrolling because it was a very entertaining read.

Title: Maybe Someday

Author: Colleen Hoover

Pages: 385

Publication: March 18th 2014 by Atria Books

Genre: New Adult, Romance, Contemporary

|GoodReads|

Maybe Someday was about Sydney whom her boyfriend was cheating on with her best friend, resulting her with swollen hands because she punched them both and nowhere to stay for the night. Her deaf guitarist neighbor, Ridge, was kind enough to let her be his roommate as long as she helps him with his writer’s block.

“We try so hard to hide everything we’re really feeling from those who probably need to know our true feelings the most.”

First off, the characters are amazing. They are so realistic and down-to-earth yet very witty with their sarcasm, sass and the right on point humor. Plus, I love that Colleen Hoover writes about characters with disabilities, it’s very eye opening.

However, the characters are way too emotional, in my opinion, especially Sydney, she basically cries whenever her heart races a little more quickly than usual. One more thing, I didn’t like Ridge towards the end of the book, it was almost like he changed into another person ,and I don’t think I liked that ‘growth’. Also, I don’t feel like I know the characters all that much, yes, we were given background stories but it wasn’t enough, though that didn’t lessen how entertaining this book was.

Don’t even talk about the chemistry between the characters and the romance, I couldn’t take my eyes of the words. [Spoilers or maybe not, but read at your own risk]- [I still don’t quiet get how you can love someone and then fall hopelessly in love with another and are still sure you love the first person. Maybe because I haven’t experienced that sort of romance, but I don’t know, to me, I can’t even think of myself with anyone else other than the person I’m with.]

“There isn’t a doubt in my mind that we could be perfect for each others life, Sydney. It’s our lives that aren’t perfect for us.”

As for the writing style, it didn’t click with me at first, I don’t know why. It grew on me later and I flew through this book in a day nonetheless. I like her recent release, November 9 much more, writing style-wise.

The ending was amazing, just swoooooon.

Anddddd, the fact that this book focuses a lot on making music and stuffs, and that they actually recorded soundtracks for it is just nandhaiuwheija life and everything.

Maybe Someday – Griffin Peterson

“I failed miserably at trying not to fall in love with you.

I failed first.”

Overall, I gave this book a 4/5 stars. It was a quick romantic read and I definitely recommend it!

Monthly Recap | January 2016 WRAP-UP

Friends! It’s the month of love and money! (Because I celebrate Chinese New Year and that means red pocket. XD)

I only read 5 books this month which is not a great start. I haven’t been blogging a lot too, like I posted less than 10 posts this month. Shammmmeeeeee! (I’m just mad at my laptop, Maxon (Yes, Maxon Schreave) because he’s been so slow and lazy and I want to get a new Mac-xon XD)

Let’s get on to the books I read:

I only did one review too!

  • The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson: 4.5/5 stars
  • Carry On by Rainbow Rowell: 4/5 stars
  • The Next Together by Lauren James: 2.75/5 stars
  • November 9 by Colleen Hoover: 5/5 stars
  • Miss Peregrines’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs: 3.5/5 stars

Despite how broke I am (and have always been) I have a quiet decent book haul to share!

I mentioned in my earlier post that I went to Thailand and I got some books, five to be exact, which are:

  • Finding Audrey by Sophie Kinsella
  • You by Caroline Kepnes
  • November 9 by Colleen Hoover (which I read and loved)
  • Extraordinary Means by Robyn Scheider
  • Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

I also won a giveaway hosted by @nerdytalkbooksblog over on Instagram. I chose two books which are:

  • The Next Together by Lauren James
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them

Then I got myself:

  • The Rest of Us just live here by Patrick Ness
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Illustrated Edition – which I get excited every time I touch it. Like, I’m weird, okay? okay.

Talking of HP, has anybody tried the new sorting hat test, on pottermore.com? Hi, I’m still in Ravenclaw 😀 (I’m in year 6 this year)

As for other posts besides book reviews, I created a new series called “Bookish Lists” which I list down a few points, discussing a bookish topic. I have made two posts so far:

And if you want to check out all the posts I made in January you can click here.

And that was my January! How was yours? I hope you had a great start and a great year to come 😀

Thank you for reading!

Book Review & Discussion | WINTER by Marissa Meyer

Greetings, bookworms!

This is my first book review of the year! Yayyy!

So Winter, the fourth and final installment in the epic sci-fi, fairytale-retelling saga, The Lunar Chronicles. It is very sad to see this amazing series come to a close but at the same time I’m glad to see it was wrapped up very nicely. 😀

Title: Winter (The Lunar Chronicles #4)

Author: Marissa Meyer

Pages: 824

Publication: November 10th 2015 by Feiwel and Friends

Source: Bought

Genre: YA, Fantasy, Sci-fi, Fairytale-Retellings

There will be spoilers for the first three books of the series in this review so read at your own risk (;D) and if you haven’t picked up this series yet, what are you waiting for? Go read it and love it and come back here to discuss about it! 😀

Winter is a retelling of Snow White with our main character, Princess Winter.

The story opens with Winter on Luna trying to fight her evil step mother mentally and also the Luna sickness that hallucinate her because she refuses to use her Luna gift to manipulate people. Winter also had to fight with her heart, her childhood best friend, Jacin, and her will be in danger if people know they have feelings for each other

Meanwhile, aboard the stolen spaceship, the Rampion, Cinder and her crews have planned to tell the people of Luna the truth that their lost Princess Selene is back to fight Levana for her (Selene’s) throne.

The moment I read the first page of this book, I was hooked. It’s probably Marissa Meyer’s writing style or the familiar design format of this book or maybe it was something else but I felt like I was home. I know that’s weird and dramatic but there’s no other way to describe that.

There were many twists and turns and awesomeness in this one, it was 824 pages and as you might have heard a thousand times that there wasn’t a dull page, it’s absolutely true. I still spent about a week to finish this giant but it was definitely worth all the ravings and five-star ratings. This series is definitely one of my favorites, one that will live with me years after this 😀

But somehow there were scenes that I thought went too smoothly and there were certain things I wished for it to happen but didn’t therefore Cress, the third book, remains to be my favorite in this series. That doesn’t mean this book was not great because it was very very amazing.

I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

My favorite thing about this series is the character. This series have got one of the most awesome set of characters ever written.

Princess Winter is the Luna people’s favorite which made her evil step-mother, Levana, despises her to the point that she wants Winter dead. Winter had to fight with Levana and her hallucinations that make her crazy because she refuses to use her Luna gifts to manipulate people like her power-drunk step-mother,  she also had to fight with her heart from staying close with her childhood best friend, Jacin, because living with Levana, the people you loved could be used against you at all time. Winter, beautiful inside and out despite the scars across her face, with her courage, wits and craziness, she was one of my favorites.

“The young princess was as beautiful as daylight. She was more beautiful even than the queen herself.”

“Winter trailed her fingers along her harness and sang to herself, “The Earth is full tonight, tonight, and the wolves all howl, aa-ooooooooooh…”

And Jacin, always want to protect his princess, it was all so sweet. Jacin was a guard in the palace, even tho Jacin wasn’t my favourite character, I really like the aspect that he cares for Winter so much, he promises to protect her with his life, he’s like the safest place that Winter can go to, she’s all that he cares about.

“So much importance pressed into so few words. It was just like Jacin.”

Then we have Cinder, the humble cyborg that was with us from the beginning. Cinder, she was scared and she doubt herself if she can be queen if she will succeed or if she was just leading all of them to death, but she still had courage and compassion to do the right thing and so she was brave. Of course I love Cinder, her POV is my favorite to read from. But because of that I feel like it’s kinda unfair, this book is supposed to be centered on Princess Winter but we’ve got more of Cinder’s POV. Not that it’s a big issue tho 🙂

“Cinder needed them. All of them. She shut her eyes and reminded herself to be brave.”

“Citizens of Luna, I ask that you stop what you’re doing to listen to this message. My name is Selene Blackburn.”

“Help me. Fight for me. And I will be the first ruler in the history of Luna who will also fight for you.”

(Cinder’s message scene was another one of my favorite, I love that she sounded like queen and strong even tho Kai wrote the script XD)

Kai too is not my favorite character but his relationship with Cinder developed very nicely in this book and it got me swooning for them. Kai was forced to marry Levana despite his hatred for the evil queen, so he tried to help as much as he can since he was being watched all the time.

We’re getting to my favourite couple XD and that is none other than Cress and Thorne. These two is just so perfect and cute together. They got me chuckled and giggled like crazy with all the misunderstandings and stuffs. I really like that we really get to see how brilliant Cress was with technology stuffs. She can hack everything and she’s just so cool.

Thorne our captain got his vision back and he’s just as hilarious and sarcastic like before. Thorne definitely light up the mood of the crew (or at least me the reader because sometimes he actually stirs up the anger in the crew XD). and need I talk about Thorne and Cress? because Thorne and Cress Thorne and Cress Thorne and Cress Thorne and Cress are perfecttttttt. They are definitely in my top favourites. 😀

“See that eye roll? It translates to, ‘How am I possibly keeping my hands off of you, Captain?” – from Thorne

“Scarlet and I are going to start a missing-fingers club. We might let Cinder be an honorary member.” – from Thorne

“She definitely has a crush on you. It’s about the size of Jupiter.” – to Cress

And then we have my least favorite couple :///. Scarlet and Wolf. I really liked the second book because it was when we got to know Thorne and all that but I never really loved Scarlet and Wolf’s story. It’s all so sweet with the Alpha male and female thing tho. Scarlet‘s POV was a bit boring to read from, Wolf’s too. But I really like Scarlet’s friendship with Winter, Scarlet was so cold and Winter was so friendly and tho they continued to be that way, we can see that Scarlet also cared for Winter deeply. As for Wolf, I thought he was a goner at the end, there was no coming back but luckily Wolf was still Wolf.

“Winter reached over and pulled the pilot’s harness over Scarlet’s head. “Safety first, Scarlet-friend. We are fragile things.”

How can I not talk about Iko? Iko’s friendship with Cinder was one of the most remarkable thing in this book, like they are android and cyborg but who cares? They love each other ❤ and their friendship was beautiful. Iko too was so funny and she helped a lot with the revolution. Even tho she lost a few limps in the end, l she knew Cinder, the best mechanics, will be able to fix her ❤

“Yeah, but broken isn’t the same as unfixable.” -IKO

Spoilery Discussion: (You’ve been warned)

Things first start to pick up when we got Cinder’s POV on the Rampion, I love the atmosphere when the crew was together, they were so funny and they all seem so close.

So, Cinder was like 16 or 17 right? Considering her age and also the crew that they are just normal teenagers, it’s pretty realistic with the plans that they came up with, it was pretty good but still I really wished it was more brilliant, more mind-blowing. There were so many flaws in their plans but that’s why things were played out this way and I’m quiet satisfied with ‘this way’.

Another part that I was not too happy about was when they went to get the antidote, like Kai did A LOT for that cure, he married Levana and everything, but it could be retrieved this easily? It was kinda funny. There weren’t many obstacles and they got the antidote to save Winter and the people in that village.

Last problem is the ending, it did wrapped up nicely tho I wished it was more than that. I need something more mind-blowing (again). It wasn’t too bad tho, I was just expecting more.

Moving on to my favorite scenes, I love when Cress and Thorne were together lol and also when the crew was together.

“Did you see any rice in there? Maybe we could fill Cinder’s head with it.”
Everyone stared at him.
“You know, to…absorb the moisture, or something. Isn’t that a thing?”
“We’re not putting rice in my head.”

I love this scene so much, it was so funny I was laughing my head off XD

“They’re the first crew I’ve ever had and most of them even call me Captain. I’m going to miss them.”

I also love Thorne’s sentimental moments XD. And his awkward, not to mention very weird, confession to Cress, but it showed that he had thought about it a lot XD And the Luna girl who made herself look like Cress and Thorne said he loved her because he thought she was Cress and awwwwww I died. I was hugging the book and smiling. (Please don’t think I’m crazy. I’m a sucker for things like that.)

I really like the excerpt, book 1…, book 2…, and stuffs. Especially book 4, with the apple thing, it was so creepy but I was busy thinking it was so cool that I wasn’t so scared.

How do you feel about Levana’s true appearance tho? I didn’t know it was that bad :/// and everything that ended with Levana, so she was shot by Cinder with a gun? I feel like she should have suffered more than that (okayy I’m evil).

And the ending, that last sentence, I told you I’m a sucker for fairytale romance like this and that last word, I died again. ❤ I read it over and over again and I love that last sentence ❤

“Oh, I fully intend to form an alliance with Luna.” Kai glanced at the cyborg foot again. “I just intend to put a different queen on the throne first.”

“Leaning forward, Cinder spoke very clearly. “I have a computer in my brain,” she said. “So while I’m not going to tell you that I am the smartest or, by any means, the most experienced person in this room, I would suggest that no one use my youth to believe that I am also ignorant.”

Cinder was so sassy.

And also the last scene in the throne room, with Thorne controlled by Levana and everything. It was so scary and ironic at the same time, Thorne punched Cinder and kept saying ‘That’s not me’ and he stabbed Cress in the stomach! Like whattttt what if she…..it was a severe wound, but she also shot Thorne’s finger, I guess they were even then lol and they all survived in the end.

Everybody was in that throne room except Jacin and Winter and that’s the only thing I would change in this book because I wish Winter was there too. Winter has every right to confront Levana and defeat her too. She has been living with the queen and endured a lot of horrible things that Levana did to her and I think she should have been there in that room. It was all very sad for Winter, we don’t know if she recovered after everything, she lost her mind by using her gift and she might never be ‘okay’ again after that. It was a very sad ending for her.

Also I’ve always thought that it would end with Cinder appointed Winter the queen of Luna or maybe a leader and Cinder herself will be an ambassador instead because that way she will be able to go to Earth and stay with Kai.

And Scarlet and Wolf at the end, and Scarlet calling her friend on Earth was also very funny, it was totally out of nowhere like LOL.

And did you noticed the guard, Kinney, and Iko, like…..they might….? XD

That was all I could think of at the moment. I really love this series and would love to fangirl about it 😀 so definitely comment your favorite scene and everything if you want to 😀

I know this a very a long post. It took me days to complete this review because i just couldn’t gather my thoughts and opinions and I didn’t know how to start but this is it so thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it 😀

2015 RECAP – THE SPINES BREAKER

We can all agree that 2015 flies by faster than the speed of light and ME here just can’t catch up and shit just gets out of control.

11047929.gif

BUT  despite all the rushing and spinning back and forth, this year was a very special year for me- FOR ME 2015 is a year of self-discovery. I’m more mature and grown up but at the same time, I’ve broken a million rules and the child side of me is getting out of hand 😉 Overall, it was a beautiful year, it passed by in a blink of the eye but the memories were countless and priceless.

happy-gifs.gif

And here’s to wrap up 2015 and pack it safe in my drawer 😉

Books

First, ofc is books. I’ve just entered the YA community in the middle of 2014 therefore I don’t have last year to compare my reading experience to.

According to our trusty ole GoodReads,

  • I have read 69 books this year (I think this doesn’t count the rereads?) which is 25,446 pages with the average length, 369 pages.
  • The shortest book I’ve read this year was Animal Farm (102 pages) and the longest book I’ve read goes to Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix (870 pages)
  • My Average Rating is 4.1 stars.

  • My favourites are: *drums rolllllll*

    • Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J Mass
    • Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass #4) by Sarah J Mass
    • Since You’ve been Gone by Morgan Matson
    • Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson
    • The Lunar Chronicles by Marrisa Meyer – I’m 2/3 into Winter and I am ready to give it 5 stars 😀
    • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
    • The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson – I was halfway in when Winter came in the way, but I loved everything I’ve read so far 😀

Blog

I created this blog in 2014 but I’ve never posted a thing. My bookblog journey began in June 2015 and to start this book blog is the best decision I’ve ever made.

I just got an email from WordPress about my blog annual report you can see (here).

  • My most popular day is Tuesday (22% of views) and my most popular hour is 3:00 pm (10% of views).
  • This blog was viewed about 3,200 times (THANK YOU SO MUCH)

And that’s the end of this wrap-up. It’s kinda sad that 2015 has come to a close but nevertheless here’s to the new amazing year!

Book Review | THE LOVER’S DICTIONARY by David Levithan

Hi friends!

I know this is completely out of the bookish topic but I went to Jessie J’s concert yesterday! Finally crossing out one thing from my bucket list (going to a concert). Well, actually I crossed it out a few months ago when Demi Lovato came to Cambodia. Getting back to Jessie J, I’m still so pumped about everything even though it’s over since last night. I wasn’t that close to the stage (Actually pretty far) but that didn’t stop me from having fun! I screamed and sang along and danced (can you believe that? me? the most introvert and shy and nerdy person ever). I came home when it was almost midnight and got a full session with mom and dad and there was no voice came out when i spoke and now that my voice is still hoarse, I regret nothing of it! I was and am so cheerful that my friend thought I was drunk. 🙂

Now let’s get on with the business deal (woah that sounds like I’m selling drugs wtf), I read The Lover’s Dictionary by David Levithan a few days ago in an ebook form. I have read another book by David Levithan, Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, which I loved the first half and only like the second half (mini review here).

At first, I was very intrigued that it’s written like a dictionary but I have heard mixed things so I couldn’t bring myself to buy a physical copy because I was afraid it won’t be that good.

And now that I’ve read it, I think it was decent but still lack something.

I don’t think it’s the fact that I wasn’t given the name of the protagonists, or that I wasn’t even sure if the narrator’s gender was a male or female, or that there was no ending or anything of that sort. Well the last one was a bit of a problem; I enjoyed reading it, I kept scrolling down for more, it was entertaining and it ended. So when it ended like that, I found myself thinking back to the reading experience and thought ‘well, that was pretty good’, but also looking back to the story, I felt like I don’t even know the characters or their story.

In this book, the main focus was on the relationship of the couple therefore there wasn’t much family time or friends time, it was mentioned just a couple of times. But I don’t mind that since it’s only about 200 e-pages, and I only want the relationship to be great but the story of the couple even wasn’t enough.

I felt like I was reading quotes after quotes and not a connected story (some were tho). Some words got the whole page and some got just a line, some were good memories, and some were arguments. I kinda like this aspect of the book, that it was unpredictable. I also like the voice of the narrator (I think he is a he-not 100% sure tho because the first half I considered he/she a she :///)

I feel like I’m repeating myself that the story wasn’t enough, so here’s my final rating:

3.5/5

And these are a few of my favorite words and explanations:

And this is the end of my review! I’ll hopefully see you in my next one ❤

Happy reading and Merry Christmas,

Kimsiang
